After Spain's national team lost to Morocco on penalties to exit the 2022 World Cup, Luis Enrique resigned as the team's head coach.
The coach has been in charge since 2018. He previously played for Real Madrid and Barcelona. Luis de la Fuente, the head coach of Spain's under-21 squad, will take over in his place.
In a statement, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) expressed its gratitude to Luis Enrique and all of his coaching staff for their leadership of the senior national team over the previous few years.
It continued, "The RFEF sports management has sent the president a report in which it is determined that a new project for the Spanish national football team should start, with the aim of continuing the growth achieved in recent years thanks to the work done by Luis Enrique and his collaborators.
The federation claimed the coach "placed his faith in young talent and has given hope for the future of the Spanish national team" by imprinting "his own stamp and through a defined style."
After the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Luis Enrique took charge of the national team and made significant roster changes.
He temporarily left because of the illness and eventual death of his young daughter but returned in 2019.
