After the most recent snub, former England international Gabby Agbonlahor urged right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold to leave the international team.

Agbonlahor made this statement in response to England manager Gareth Southgate's choice to leave Alexander-Arnold out of his team for Monday's UEFA Nations League match against Germany.

The former captain of Aston Villa claimed it was disrespectful of Southgate to imply that Liverpool's star full-back was outclassed by Kieran Trippier of Newcastle United.

Out of six Nations League games for the Three Lions, Alexander-Arnold has only made one appearance because Southgate has largely preferred Trippier and Reece James of Chelsea.

If I were Trent, I would end my international service if I wasn't selected for the World Cup team. Agbonlahor said on talkSPORT, "I would retire until a new manager took over England and gave me the opportunity to retire.

“Because what’s the point of going away on these international breaks? You can stay with your club, rest and prepare yourself for Liverpool."
He added: “For Southgate to come out and say Trippier is all-round better than Trent, I think that’s an insult. I do like Trippier, but Trent is an all-round better player than Trippier. Walker and James, for me, are better than Trent, but don’t say Trippier.
“Come on," he jokes, "gareth." But it wouldn’t surprise me if he did. We have seen players in the past retire from England when they weren’t getting the opportunities.
