Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo immediately texted broadcaster Piers Morgan from the locker room after his side's 2-0 World Cup win over Uruguay to claim that he did, in fact, touch teammate Bruno Fernandes’ cross to open the scoring.
This claim was made by former USA international Alexi Lalas.
“The breaking news is that Cristiano Ronaldo did not score despite his claims that it [the ball] did touch him,” Lalas said on Fox Soccer.
“I was just with Piers Morgan, and he said that Cristiano texted him from the locker room, saying that he believes that it touched his head. So, um, who knows?”
Recall that Fernandes scored a brace to help Portugal seal the victory against Uruguay in their second World Cup Group H tie on Monday night.
However, it seemed like Ronaldo had scored the first goal for Portugal against Uruguay.
The former Manchester United attacker claimed the first goal from Fernandes’ cross.
But replays showed that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner did not touch the ball, and Fernandes was awarded the goal.
Morgan, however, celebrated prematurely, as he uploaded a photo of Ronaldo celebrating and tagged the post.
