It was a dramatic show yesterday (Monday) in Ilorin the capital city of Kwara state when police officers used tear gas to dismantled protesting students of the Kwara state college of Education Ilorin.

It is informative to note that, the students ought to have started their second semester exam yesterday but they were utterly astounded when they converged in their lecture halls for their examinations only for them to meet the lecture halls scheduled for the exam to be empty because their lecturers had opted to boycott the examination.

The lecturers needed to boycott the examination because the Kwara state government is yet to pay their salaries for months, and it is through boycotting of the examination can their grievances be made known to the public. And this led the students to start protesting on behalf of their lecturers, and also a situation which had denied them the opportunity of commencing their semester examination.

The aggrieved students started a protest to the Government House in Ilorin, the state capital but the protest was abruptly ended along unity road, some meters away from government house as policemen dispersed them with tear gas forcing the students and passersby to scamper for safety.

The Kwara state Police Public Relations Officer, Ayaji Okasanmi says that the students were dispersed because they ‘became uncontrollable and damaged some properties’.

Meanwhile, the Kwara state government has assured the students and their lecturers that strategic actions will be taken concerning their demands.
