Controversial UK-based Celebrity pastor; Pastor Tobi Adegboyega, the founder of SPAC Nation, has sparked conversations online after referring to Nigerian music superstar David Adeleke, aka Davido, as a gospel artist.
Appearing on the Off The Record podcast, which went viral on Monday, the flamboyant pastor shared his perspective on what defines gospel music. According to Adegboyega, the term "gospel" means "good news," a message he believes Davido embodies through his music.
Addressing criticism for inviting secular musicians to his recent birthday celebration instead of gospel performers, Adegboyega defended his choices.
He stated:
“Gospel implies good news. Everyone there is a gospel artist. Davido is a gospel artist. Have you heard the phrase: ‘Because I stand strong?’
The pastor further explained his strong bond with Nigerian artist Zlatan, whom he described as a son, adding that his friendships guided his guest list.
“What I had then were my friends—friends who are there through thick and thin. Davido said, ‘I just want to be there and perform for one hour.’ They are my friends. I did not pay for any of them. They adore me, and I will offer my friends platforms.”
Adegboyega also criticized gospel musicians who questioned his decisions rather than fostering relationships.
“If gospel musicians aren’t my friends and instead join the bandwagon to criticize me by asking, ‘Is it a church?’ What shall I do? Drag them by a rope?
My friends will always sing at my events, and the next one will be bigger because my circle of friends keeps growing.”
The pastor’s statements have drawn mixed reactions, with some people questioning his perspective.
