Another group of Nigerians who were stranded in Libya have been evacuated by the Federal Government and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

151 people were flown out of Benghazi as the government resumed its voluntary evacuation, according to Ambassador Kabiru Musa, charge d'affaires of the Nigerian Mission in Libya, who made the announcement in an Abuja statement on Tuesday.

At the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, the evacuees—which included 71 women, 54 men, 14 kids, and 13 infants—arrived tonight.

Nearly 4,000 unauthorized migrants from Nigeria were repatriated in 2022 by the IOM and Ministry of Foreign Affairs via the Mission in Libya.

The March 28 evacuation, according to Musa, was the first in 2023; he added that there would be more drills in the following days and weeks.

He further hinted that several Nigerians living illegally in Libya have been “subjected to very inhumane treatment,” adding that voluntary repatriation offers an opportunity for those who want to return to do so safely and reunite with their families.

More Nigerians will be evacuated from Tripoli on Wednesday, while another batch has been scheduled for April 3 from Misrata.
