An Osun State High Court has sentenced five men to death by hanging for the abduction and murder of Fulani herder Ibrahim Adamu, who sold cows in Owode-Ede, Osun State.

The court delivered its verdict on Tuesday, concluding a case that began with the defendants' arraignment on October 28, 2021.

Adamu was abducted from his home on April 17, 2018, and taken to a secluded location in his Toyota Corolla. Despite paying a ransom of N3 million, Adamu was killed after he recognized one of his abductors. The defendants—Ibrahim Issa, Lateef Bello, Abdul Ramon Soliu, Bello Ibrahim, and Abudu Mumini Jolaanobi Saheed—faced charges of conspiracy, kidnapping, and murder, all contrary to Sections 324, 319, and 364 of the Criminal Code Laws of Osun State. They pleaded not guilty to all charges.

During the trial, lead prosecuting counsel Mr. Moses Faremi from the Ministry of Justice presented evidence including extrajudicial statements and a mask allegedly used by the defendants, which was found at the crime scene. Investigating Police Officer Mr. Ganiyu Taofeek testified that Adamu, while held captive, identified one of his kidnappers, prompting the criminals to kill him.

The case, heard by Justice Kudirat Akano, concluded with the conviction and sentencing of the defendants, marking a significant moment in the pursuit of justice for Adamu and his family.
