A staff member of the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) in Makurdi lost his life after being accused of stealing a mobile phone.
The incident unfolded in Gyado Villa, located along Makurdi-Gboko Road, where local youths learned of a missing phone and summoned the accused for questioning. Shockingly, instead of a fair inquiry, the situation escalated, leading to the victim being tortured to death, as reported by The Nation.
In response to the tragic event, a youth group supportive of the deceased took matters into their own hands. On Saturday night, Feb. 17, they mobilized and set fire to the house of the father of the youth leader believed to have orchestrated the fatal torture.
The aftermath of this retaliation plunged the community into chaos, prompting numerous residents to evacuate their homes, gripped by fear of the unknown consequences.
In the wake of these disturbing events, police sources have confirmed the commencement of investigations to uncover the root causes and individuals responsible for the crisis. The incident highlights the urgent need for community dialogues and conflict resolution to prevent such tragic incidents from occurring in the future.
