Renowned Nigerian singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has recently made headlines not for his music, but for a legal matter involving his first child, Imade, whom he shares with Sophia Momodu.
In a bold move, Davido has taken his former partner to court in a bid to secure custody of their daughter.
In an originating motion filed at the Lagos State High Court on April 17, 2024, Davido, represented by his legal team comprising Dr. Olaniyi Arije, Okey Barrah, and others, has requested the court to grant him joint custody of Imade Adeleke. Alternatively, he seeks unrestricted access to his daughter.
The suit, with reference LD/1587PMC/2024, identifies Davido as the applicant and Sophia Momodu as the sole respondent. It is supported by a detailed 44-paragraph affidavit personally deposed to by Davido, outlining the history of his relationship with Momodu and their shared responsibilities towards their child.
Davido emphasized his commitment to Imade's well-being, citing his consistent payment of her school fees and providing for her educational needs. Additionally, he has financially supported Momodu by paying for their daughter's accommodation and offering a luxurious apartment worth N200 million in Oniru, Victoria Island, which she reportedly declined in favor of continued financial support for rented accommodation.
The singer expressed concern over the well-being of Imade, highlighting instances where he provided vehicles for their transportation needs, including a Range Rover SUV and a Highlander SUV. Despite his efforts, Davido recounted challenges, such as a school absence incident allegedly due to the condition of the Range Rover, which he promptly addressed by providing additional financial support.
This legal action underscores Davido's determination to secure a more formalized role in his daughter's upbringing, ensuring both parental involvement and a stable environment for Imade's growth and development.
As the case unfolds in court, it brings to light broader discussions about parental rights, responsibilities, and the legal framework surrounding custody disputes. Davido's initiative reflects a proactive approach to family matters, aiming to prioritize Imade's best interests while navigating the complexities of co-parenting.
