Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru donated 14 new SUVs to newly ordained priests of the Abakaliki Diocese.

The presentation took place during their ordination ceremony at St. Theresa's Catholic Cathedral in the state capital on Saturday.

Governor Nwifuru's donation comes amidst significant economic challenges and high poverty levels in Ebonyi State, which is ranked low on the poverty index. The governor explained that the vehicles are intended to support the priests in their spiritual work, enabling them to effectively serve their communities and spread the word of God.

This act of generosity follows a similar gesture last July when Governor Nwifuru gifted five vehicles to newly ordained priests, showcasing his consistent support for the religious community in Ebonyi State.

Despite these charitable acts, Ebonyi State faces severe economic hardships. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, Ebonyi is the poorest state in Southern Nigeria, with an 80% poverty rate, ranking fourth on the national poverty index. Only Sokoto, Taraba, and Jigawa in the Northern region have higher poverty levels.

Concerns have been raised about Governor Nwifuru's allocation of resources, particularly in light of recent frustrations expressed by civil servants over a modest N10,000 salary increment. Many are questioning the governor's priorities as the state struggles with poverty and economic difficulties.
