A tragic incident unfolded in Hawan-Kibo community of Riyom Local Government Area, Plateau State, and at least 12 individuals lost their lives on Thursday, with an additional 30 sustaining injuries in a harrowing truck accident.

Reports indicate that the articulated vehicle, laden with bags of grains and passengers, faced a calamity as it descended a hill on a deteriorating road. The ill-fated crash occurred in the afternoon, causing the truck to collide with a ditch, resulting in the spillage of its cargo and the immediate loss of many lives.

Eyewitnesses at the scene shared accounts of the trailer's descent from Jos and its catastrophic crash, leaving a grim aftermath in the ditch. Mr. Godwin Alphonsus, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Plateau State, confirmed the incident in Jos on Thursday evening.

According to Alphonsus, the accident was a solitary crash attributed to brake failure. He explained, "The trailer was carrying bags of grains and human beings. It had a brake failure and crashed into a ditch while ascending a hill. The accident happened in the afternoon on Thursday." As rescue efforts unfolded in Hawan-Kibo, it was revealed that 11 individuals succumbed to their injuries on the spot. Subsequent records indicated that 30 people were rescued and transported to medical facilities. Unfortunately, the toll rose to 12 as one of the injured victims passed away at Gidan Way community later in the evening.

Expressing sorrow over the unfortunate incident, the sector commander appealed to motorists to exercise extra caution and vigilance while driving. The tragedy serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of road safety measures and the need for heightened awareness among drivers navigating challenging terrains.
