In a major political shift, Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has instructed all 23 local government chairmen to contest the upcoming local government elections under the banner of the All People’s Party (APP).

The decision follows Governor Fubara’s loss of control over the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) structure in the state to his predecessor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

The local government elections, set for October 5, 2024, have become a focal point of the power struggle between Fubara and Wike. Wike's continued influence over the PDP in Rivers has created friction between the two leaders, with Governor Fubara now looking to the APP as an alternative platform to challenge Wike’s dominance.

By endorsing the APP, a party that previously had little influence in the region, Fubara aims to reshape the political landscape of Rivers State. The governor's decision to back the APP has given the party a significant boost, as it will now have the support of incumbent local government chairmen heading into the elections.
