The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has criticized Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, for attempting to enter the State House of Assembly Quarters without an official invitation.
Wike, during a media chat in Abuja on Wednesday, stated that Fubara had no right to visit the quarters after demolishing it in December 2023. He emphasized that the governor should have waited for approval from the Martins Amaewhule-led Assembly before making an appearance.
Fubara Locked Out Amidst Budget Presentation Attempt
Governor Siminalayi Fubara was reportedly denied entry into the quarters on Wednesday when he arrived to re-present the 2025 budget—a move that followed the Supreme Court's ruling on February 28, 2025, recognizing Martins Amaewhule as the legitimate Speaker of the House.
Amaewhule, alongside over 20 lawmakers loyal to Wike, had previously instructed Fubara to return with the budget. However, despite notifying the Assembly of his visit, the governor was not granted access.
Wike Blasts Fubara’s Actions
Wike accused Fubara of grandstanding for public attention, stating that proper protocols should have been followed.
"If you send a letter to the Assembly, won’t you wait for a response? He is playing to the gallery. He brought television crews just to create a spectacle—he knows it’s wrong," Wike remarked.
He further questioned Fubara’s approach, comparing it to a scenario where the President of Nigeria walks into the National Assembly unannounced.
"He demolished the Assembly Complex, and now the lawmakers sit in their residence. If you're visiting, they have families—they need time to prepare. You can’t just show up, break open the gate, and say, ‘I’m here to present the budget.’ That’s nonsense! Absolute rubbish!" Wike fumed.
Political Tensions Deepen in Rivers State
This latest incident adds to the ongoing power struggle between Wike and Fubara, with the political landscape in Rivers State growing more volatile. As tensions rise, all eyes remain on the unfolding drama between the two political heavyweights.
