On Thursday, Senate President Ahmad Lawan expressed optimism that a majority of the candidates for the All Progressives Congress's (APC) National Convention on Saturday will be chosen by consensus.
Before the convention, Lawan said the party had already reached a consensus on candidate selection across the states and zones.
After a meeting of the APC Senate Caucus and the party's Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee at the APC national Secretariat in Abuja, the Senate President talked to journalists.
"The next two days are critical for us, and we must ensure that everything is in order so that no one causes a problem."
"Thank God, we're coming to an agreement across the states and zones, and I'm confident there will be very few elective offices to vote for by the time we get to the convention grounds." "Consensus would have gotten us most of the way," Lawan remarked.
The Senate President stated that the APC Senate Caucus was paying a solidarity visit to the committee's leadership, whom he congratulated for their outstanding performance.
Lawan remarked, "We've come to show support for our party and the caretaker and convention planning committee leadership."
"They've done a fantastic job. The national convention is only two days away. The APC caucus in the Senate has always been a strong supporter of the party.
"In our opinion, the caretaker committee that has been operating our party has done an outstanding job and deserves our unwavering support, commitment, dedication, and loyalty."
"As a party, we believe that this is a pivotal time in the APC's existence in Nigeria. It's critical that we get the convention correct. We need a highly successful, peaceful convention when we elect our party's leaders, who will lead the party for the next four years.
"As a result, every hand must be on deck, and we have come to say that our hands are available to be on deck at any time."
"We are pleased that the party has treated us so well, as it has in the past, and the Chairman of the Caretaker and Convention Planning Committee has voiced his highest praise for the APC Senate Caucus."
"We are not only members of this party, but also major financial contributors. We also believe that we have contributed to the existence of this party morally.
"In truth, the APC caucus in the National Assembly can be credited with ensuring Nigeria's current political stability."
"We have been able to work with Mr. President in such a peaceful, cordial manner, and what we can tell you today in Nigeria is that the relationship between two arms of the APC govt in the Villa and the National Assembly has created an environment in which even opposition political parties are free to do what they believe they should do."
"As a result, I'd want to thank my colleagues for banding together to guarantee that our party remains stable in the National Assembly so that our administration can continue to flourish, and we wish the Convention Planning Committee and its leadership the best of luck."
Earlier, Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, Chairman of the APC Caretaker and Convention Committee, commended the Senators for their conservative support and the APC administration.
Buni listed the committee's accomplishments and begged for their continuing support.
