The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has strongly criticized the six-month suspension of Kogi Central Senatorial District representative, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, labeling it an act of intimidation.
NBA Women Forum Chairperson, Huwaila Muhammad, pointed out that the suspension appears to be the result of an ongoing dispute between Akpoti-Uduaghan and the Senate President. She raised concerns over the handling of the lawmaker’s conduct during last week’s plenary session, stating that the Senate’s decision might not have been in the best interest of justice.
Muhammad further emphasized the seriousness of the sexual harassment allegations leveled against the Senate President, stressing that Akpoti-Uduaghan was denied a fair hearing.
"Her suspension looks like intimidation. You cannot be a judge in your own case. If an issue directly affects you, step aside and allow justice to take its course. Fairness is key. The allegation is serious, and we expect due process to be followed," Muhammad stated.
The controversy continues to generate nationwide reactions, with legal and political observers calling for transparency in the case.
