The Ogun State Police Command has officially confirmed the arrest of 11 suspects in connection with the recent surge in cult clashes that rocked various parts of Abeokuta over the weekend, claiming the lives of four individuals.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the state command, Omolola Odutola, provided details to the press on Monday, shedding light on the incidents. She disclosed that Seun Elewode, a member of the Aye cult group, lost his life during a shootout between rival cult factions in the Adeun area of Lafenwa, Abeokuta. Another casualty, suspected to be a member of the Buccaneer confraternity, met his demise in the Akinolugbade area of the town.

According to Odutola, Seun Elewode, a notorious Aye cult member recently released from prison, was attacked and fatally shot during a confrontation at their hideout in a local gathering spot during a birthday celebration. The police spokesperson also reported that on February 4, around 10:45 pm in Oshungboye Crescent in Akinolugbade, a suspected cultist was shot dead, while another sustained a gunshot wound to the chest.

In response to these incidents, the Ogun State Police Command swiftly apprehended 11 suspects linked to the cult-related violence. The arrested individuals include Oluga Abiola, Olamilekan Abiodun, Olarenwaju Michael, Jimoh Okewole, Wasu Tolulope, Abiodun Adeyemi, Muiz Adeyemi, Adebowale Saheed, Adebowale Ayoola, David Oviem, and Adebowale Olayori.

The cult clashes reportedly began on Thursday when Dare, a suspected leader of the Eiye confraternity, was shot dead in front of his house in the Ijeja area of Abeokuta. The violence continued with another cult-related killing in the Isabo area on Sunday, further escalating concerns among residents.

As the community grapples with these disturbing events, calls for urgent government intervention and heightened security measures have echoed among residents, emphasizing the need to address the root causes of the violence before it escalates further.
