Amidst swirling allegations of budget padding and suspension of a senator, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has demanded an independent investigation into the purported N3.
7 trillion padding in the 2024 budget. The party has urged Senate President Godswill Akpabio to step aside to allow for a transparent probe into the matter.
The suspension of Senator Abdul Ningi from Bauchi Central for three months came following a heated three-hour debate triggered by his interview comments alleging an inflation of the 2024 budget to N28.7 trillion by the National Assembly.
In response, the PDP, through its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, voiced support for Ningi, criticizing the Senate's decision to suspend him without conducting a thorough investigation into the budget padding allegations.
The party's statement highlighted concerns over the integrity of the budget process and called for accountability from Akpabio, urging him to report to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission regarding an alleged N108 billion misappropriation during his tenure as Akwa Ibom State Governor.
Furthermore, the PDP demanded transparency regarding an alleged N86 billion contract scam in the Niger Delta Development Commission during Akpabio's tenure as Minister of Niger Delta Affairs.
Describing Ningi's suspension as an attempt to stifle investigation and conceal facts, the PDP questioned why the APC-led Senate leadership did not refer the matter to the appropriate committee for an open investigation as per Senate rules. The party also criticized Akpabio for presiding over the matter, which it argued could tarnish the Senate's reputation.
The PDP's stance underscores the importance of accountability and transparency in governance, particularly concerning budgetary matters. As the controversy unfolds, the demand for an impartial investigation reflects the imperative of upholding integrity and trust in Nigeria's legislative processes.
