The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, has confirmed the arrest of 32 suspects following a violent incident at the Federal College of Education (Technical) in Akoka.

The suspects were apprehended after attacking a Ministry of Education team sent to mediate a three-month-long dispute between the college staff and the Provost, who had been locked out of his office.

According to SP Hundeyin, the mediation effort turned chaotic when staff and students assaulted the team, resulting in extensive property damage, including over five vehicles and the Provost's quarters. The rioters also blocked all entrances and exits of the college, necessitating a police intervention.

Reacting to a viral report by Tomisin (#TomisinWhyte) on X.com, which alleged police shootings and the use of tear gas during the protests, SP Hundeyin clarified that the police action was essential to restore order. Tomisin had tweeted an emergency alert about the situation, urging the public to spread the word.

SP Hundeyin explained that the staff of the Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka had locked out the Provost for over three months. When the mediation team from Abuja arrived, they were met with hostility, and the situation escalated with attacks on vehicles and property. The police intervened after being attacked with stones and sachets of water, successfully restoring peace and order.

Hundeyin confirmed that 32 suspects have been arrested, and the Nigeria Police Force from the Area Command, Surulere, remains on the scene to maintain the restored peace.
