The Nigeria Police Force has successfully dismantled a cartel dealing in jewelry worth billions of Naira, stolen from various armed robbery operations in Abuja and its environs.

According to ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the force's spokesperson, an armed robbery incident occurred on April 28, 2024, at the residence of a police officer attached to the Force Headquarters in Lugbe, Abuja. During the robbery, the officer was nearly smothered, and a secured safe containing jewelry, money, academic certificates, documents, phones, and other valuable items belonging to several residents in the compound was stolen. CCTV footage capturing the suspect at the crime scene has been instrumental in advancing forensic investigations.

Further investigations led the police to Wuse Market, where the stolen items were allegedly purchased by Alhaji Auwal. Despite police warnings to the FCT Gold Dealers Association about the stolen gold, Alhaji Auwal facilitated its purchase and instructed his associates on handling it. The Force Intelligence Department's deeper probe revealed that Alhaji Auwal, his sons, and other associates are part of a cartel dealing in stolen jewelry. This group has been linked to previous similar cases under police investigation across the FCT. Currently, 26 suspects have been arrested in connection with the case, and many others are in custody under a court order. They will be charged upon the completion of investigations, contrary to circulating rumors.

It is important to clarify that the facts of this matter have been deliberately distorted by Sahara Reporters. Allegations that the robbery occurred at the residence of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) are false. The robbery took place at the home of a police officer in Lugbe, not at any official facility of the Nigeria Police Force.

Assertions that the robbery occurred at the IGP's residence are unfounded. The IGP's residence is heavily fortified and secure, making it nearly impossible for such incidents to occur. Had there been a robbery at the IGP's residence, the narrative would focus on the detention of numerous policemen, not a ring of armed robbers. For clarity, the IGP's residence and its neighborhood are well-protected against any security breaches or criminal activities.
