In a groundbreaking initiative to combat poverty and uplift vulnerable citizens, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration has approved a N4 billion fund for conditional cash transfers targeting Nigerian households.
Announced on January 23, 2025, this significant move has sparked joy among beneficiaries and supporters nationwide. The program, scheduled to roll out from February to April 2025, aims to support at least 10 million displaced households across Nigeria, offering crucial relief in challenging times.
Focus on Vulnerable Groups
During the launch of the 2025 Nigeria Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan (HNRP) at the United Nations House in Abuja, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, unveiled the initiative. The program prioritizes the most at-risk members of society, including:
- Women: Widows and pregnant women, who often face immense financial and social pressures.
- People with Disabilities: Providing essential support to individuals with disabilities to improve their quality of life.
- Displaced Families: Households affected by conflicts, natural disasters, or other crises, particularly in the Northeast geopolitical zone.
Boosting Food Production with N2 Billion Interest-Free Loans
In addition to the cash transfers, the Tinubu administration has allocated N2 billion for interest-free loans to empower farmers in rural areas. These loans, ranging between N300,000 and N400,000 per household, are designed to boost food production and promote self-sufficiency, ensuring long-term economic stability.
This dual-pronged approach reflects the administration's commitment to reducing poverty, fostering economic growth, and supporting Nigeria's most vulnerable communities.
Stay tuned for updates as the program launches next month!
