A five-storey building owned by Rochas Okorocha, former governor of Imo State, collapsed on Tuesday evening along Ahmadu Bello Way in Abuja.

Eyewitnesses reported that the building, which was under renovation, suddenly gave way, raising concerns about potential casualties.

Security operatives from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command quickly cordoned off the area. Eyewitnesses indicated that some individuals might have been trapped inside the rubble. "There is a possibility that there could be some people inside the collapsed building who may have died. I saw two people being pulled out from the rubble now and taken to the hospital while rescue operations were ongoing. The emergency responders are not coordinated yet for efficient operations,” one witness reported.

In a statement, FCT Police Command spokesperson Josephine Adeh confirmed that three people were rescued from the collapsed structure. The statement read: “The FCT Police Command hereby confirms that yesterday, July 1, 2024, about 8:40 p.m., there was a building collapse at Unity House, Area 11 by Nkwere Street."

Rescue operations are ongoing as authorities work to ensure all trapped individuals are safely recovered.
