The National Convener of Women Advocacy for Good Governance and a strong advocate for cultural and heritage values, Nike AbdulRahman, has strongly condemned the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, calling it a direct attack on justice and fair hearing.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan was recently suspended from the Nigerian Senate after making allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
In a powerful statement released in Akure, Ondo State, on Saturday, AbdulRahman criticized the Senate’s decision, warning that such actions create a dangerous precedent for women who dare to speak up against abuse and misconduct in Nigeria.
She expressed deep concerns over the Senate's commitment to justice and accountability, emphasizing that the swift suspension of Akpoti-Uduaghan undermines the principles of fairness and the rule of law.
“The hasty suspension of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan raises serious doubts about the Senate’s willingness to uphold justice and protect its members’ rights,” AbdulRahman stated.
She further accused the Senate leadership of silencing a senator who demanded accountability, thereby failing not just Akpoti-Uduaghan but also millions of Nigerian women who look to legislative institutions for protection and justice.
Calling for an immediate reversal of the suspension, AbdulRahman urged the Senate to allow Akpoti-Uduaghan to continue representing her constituents without fear of retaliation.
