A tragic boat accident on Monday, October 7, 2024, has left several people injured, with others still missing in Lagos.

The incident occurred near Imore Town, when two unregistered passenger boats collided in the middle of the lagoon, leading to both boats capsizing.

According to the Lagos State Police Command, each boat was carrying 16 passengers when the collision happened. SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed that the accident took place around 7:00 PM and triggered an immediate response.

“A distress call was received at the Ilashe Division, and we deployed a response team comprising marine and conventional police officers, local divers, and other emergency responders,” Hundeyin stated. “So far, 11 passengers have been rescued with injuries and are receiving treatment at the Naval Hospital in Navy Town Alakija.”

The rescue operation is ongoing, with efforts focused on recovering the remaining passengers, some of whom are feared to have drowned. Authorities have also launched an investigation to determine the cause of the collision. They have called on boat operators to comply with safety regulations, including registering their vessels and ensuring that passengers wear life jackets.

The Lagos State Police Command has assured the public that they are working diligently with emergency services to bring the situation under control and prevent further tragedies.
