Troops of Operation UDO KA neutralized six terrorists following a raid on the camp of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), in Igboro Forest, Arochukwu Local Government of Abia State on Saturday.
The Nigerian Army disclosed the success of the operation on its X handle on Sunday, stating that the mission aimed to apprehend those responsible for last week's attack on its troops in Aba.
During the intelligence-led operation, troops encountered Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) along their advance route, resulting in a minor injury to one soldier from the fragment. The terrorists' feeble firefight was swiftly subdued by the superior firepower of the troops, leading to the neutralization of six members of the criminal group. Others escaped into the surrounding bushes, leaving behind blood stains that indicated varying degrees of gunshot wounds.
The gallant troops recovered three locally fabricated Rocket Propelled Grenade launchers, two locally fabricated artillery guns with tripods and bombs, dane guns, Biafran flags, and Toyota Tundra and Hilux vehicles, which were burnt on site. All of the terrorists' camps, marked with different inscriptions, were destroyed.
The Joint Task Force Operation UDO KA called on the people of Abia to continue cooperating with security agencies by providing credible and timely information to help eliminate criminals in the state and throughout South East Nigeria.
This operation followed an attack last week at Obikabia Junction Checkpoint in Obingwa Local Government Area, near Aba metropolis, where six soldiers were killed by IPOB/ESN members. The attackers arrived in three tinted Toyota Prado SUVs and other vehicles from surrounding areas. Six civilians were also killed in the crossfire between the terrorists and troops.
In response to the killing of the soldiers, Major General Edward Buba, the military spokesperson, vowed a brutal retaliation. "The armed forces mourn the death of these troops as every soldier lost in battle is a terrible loss. Investigations are ongoing concerning the attack," he stated.
