Barring any unexpected changes, Paris Saint-Germain's Moroccan fullback, Achraf Hakimi will go home tonight with the C AF Player of the Year award.
The defender has broken his silence amidst widespread reports suggesting he is the frontrunner for the 2024 African Footballer of the Year award. If confirmed, he will beat notable contenders, including Nigeria's Ademola Lookman, to clinch the prestigious accolade.
Reports from French, Moroccan, and Egyptian outlets hint that Hakimi is set to be crowned Africa's best footballer during a ceremony in his homeland on Monday, December 16. Al Ahly TV even revealed plans for Hakimi to fly to Marrakech via private jet, accompanied by PSG President Nasser Al Khelaïfi, following PSG’s Ligue 1 clash against Lyon.
Hakimi's exceptional performances over the past year have earned him widespread acclaim. He was pivotal in PSG's UEFA Champions League semifinal run, claimed Ligue 1, Coupe de France, and Trophée des Champions titles, and helped Morocco secure a bronze medal at the 2024 Olympic Games.
In an interview on Téléfoot, Hakimi expressed his ambitions for the award:
"This nomination rewards all the work I have done since I was little. I hope to win this important trophy in my career."
However, Ademola Lookman remains a strong challenger. The Atalanta forward had a stellar season and was named in the Africa Cup of Nations Team of the Tournament, bolstering his chances of becoming the next Nigerian to win the award after legends like Rashidi Yekini, Nwankwo Kanu, and Victor Osimhen.
French football magazine Onze Mondial believes Hakimi is the likely winner, barring an unexpected twist. Fans across the continent eagerly await the official announcement to see if the Moroccan star will add this prestigious honour to his growing list of accolades.
