Newcastle United defender, Kieran Trippier, has revealed how angry he was when his teammate Bruno Guimares nearly cost them the game during the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool at the Wembley Stadium.
The England international said he was fuming and would have strangled Guimares if Liverpool had made a comeback in the game.
Magpies won 2-1 in the game to lift the trophy and book a place in Europe next season.
Speaking on CBS Sports, Thierry Henry questioned Trippier about how he felt when his Brazilian teammate lost the ball, leading to Lvierpool’s only goal of the match.
Responding to the Arsenal legend, Trippier admitted that he was fuming at the midfielder’s decision not to release the ball quick.
“I was fuming! I was fuming. I was fuming. In moments like this, it’s about game management,” the Englishman said.
“Just one single pass and he’s through on goal, but can’t blame Bruno, he’s been unbelievable for us.”
Asked if his mistake would have started the comeback, he added, “I would have strangled him.”
It was Newcastle United’s first trophy after 70 years and they were 2-0 up through Dan Burn and Alexander Isak before Federico Chiesa scored for Liverpool to make it 2-1.
