Cristiano Ronaldo faces a backlash in Portugal if he says yes to a staggering £173 million-a-year offer on the table from Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr.
Sportsmail reports that the three-year deal would see Ronaldo commit to becoming the face of football in Saudi Arabia.
And this includes supporting the country’s bid to host the 2030 World Cup.
Portugal is also bidding to host the tournament together with Spain, which has raised the prospect of a situation where Ronaldo is seeking to defeat his own country.
To make matters worse, Ronaldo’s eternal rival Lionel Messi also has a deal to promote Saudi tourism.
However, that does not involve the World Cup bid, with his native Argentina also launching a joint bid.
Ronaldo is yet to find a new club after Manchester United terminated his contract in November.
