Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has voiced his disappointment over the club’s decision to sell Scott McTominay, who has been excelling in Italy with Napoli.
United offloaded the Scottish midfielder to Napoli for £25 million last summer but have struggled to find a suitable replacement. Meanwhile, McTominay has been thriving under Antonio Conte, scoring seven goals and providing four assists in 27 appearances. His performances have helped Napoli climb to second place in Serie A, solidifying his role as a key player in Conte’s system.
In stark contrast, Manchester United are enduring a dismal season under new boss Ruben Amorim. The Red Devils currently sit 14th in the Premier League after 27 games and recently crashed out of the FA Cup, suffering a heartbreaking 4-3 defeat on penalties to Fulham.
Speaking to The Athletic, Solskjaer praised Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire but admitted he was frustrated by McTominay’s departure.
“When I can, I watch United play. It’s great to see Bruno Fernandes and Harry [Maguire] doing well. And Scotty is thriving at Napoli,” Solskjaer said. “I’m upset that we let him go because he was crucial last season, always popping up with important goals. His heart and understanding of the club’s culture were invaluable.”
During his time at Old Trafford, McTominay made 115 appearances under Solskjaer, scoring 14 goals and providing three assists. His departure has left a noticeable void in Manchester United’s midfield, adding to the club’s ongoing struggles this season.
