Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini has criticized Ademola Lookman for taking a penalty during their UEFA Champions League play-off clash against Club Brugge.
La Dea suffered a 3-1 defeat at home on Tuesday night, crashing out 5-2 on aggregate after a disappointing first half that saw Brugge score three times.
Lookman, introduced after the break, made an instant impact by pulling one back for Atalanta. However, the Nigeria international squandered a crucial penalty in the 62nd minute, ending any hopes of a comeback.
An unhappy Gasperini did not hold back in his post-match comments:
“Lookman was not supposed to take that penalty. He is one of the worst penalty takers I’ve ever seen. His record, even in training, is terrible—he converts very few of them. Retegui and De Ketelaere were the designated takers, but Lookman, in a moment of enthusiasm after scoring, grabbed the ball. That was a gesture I did not appreciate at all.”
Atalanta’s Champions League dreams are over, and Lookman’s penalty blunder will undoubtedly be a talking point for fans and pundits alike.
