First of all install cwm recovery of your phone model and do backup from there.

Download the root package from here and save it to your phone memory.

Now, turn off your phone you can do that by pressing power button once and selecting power off or by pressing and holding the power key for about 5 or 6 seconds.Then enter recovery mode on your Android device.

From recovery select install zip from SD card followed by choose zip from SD card.Pick the root file and flash the same on your Desire 816.

In the end, from main menu of recovery select reboot system now.If you end up by experiencing a boot loop error, go back to recovery and from there select wipe data factory reset, wipe cache partition and wipe dalvick cache. That should resolve your problem and you should be able to safely use your device as usually.
