Unidentified gunmen, believed to be kidnappers, launched an incursion into the Gandu community, situated approximately two kilometers from the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia) in Nasarawa State.
During the incident, which occurred on Monday, November 6, 2023, at around 8:30 PM, a third-year Sociology Department student was shot. In addition to this, the assailants also kidnapped a well-known local businessman.
An eyewitness, speaking to Punch, disclosed that the occurrence has instilled fear among the area's residents. The injured student was promptly transported to a medical facility for treatment after being shot by the bandits. The source expressed hope for a speedy recovery, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.
Residents are living in fear due to the ongoing attacks, student kidnappings, and various criminal activities in the vicinity. This has disrupted their ability to study during nighttime hours for upcoming examinations due to concerns of being targeted or harassed by suspected kidnappers.
In response to the incident, Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State expressed his apprehension regarding the escalating insecurity surrounding tertiary institutions in the state. The governor conveyed his concerns during a visit to the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Lafia following the attack that took place on Monday night.
Governor Sule extended his sympathies to the institution's management over the unfortunate event and reaffirmed his administration's dedication to bolstering security in residential areas frequented by students as part of their commitment to addressing security concerns.
