Nigerian singer Ice Prince has set the record straight, revealing that he, not Davido, is the first African artist to receive a BET Award on stage at the prestigious ceremony.
In a recent episode of Listening, Ice Prince, who won the Best International Act, Africa Award in 2013, shared his pride in breaking the long-standing tradition of African artists receiving their awards backstage. "I am the first African artist to go on the BET stage and receive an award solo. Fans mistakenly credit that achievement to Davido," he said.
Although Davido captured attention in 2018 with his powerful acceptance speech for the Best International Act award, where he called for increased collaboration between US and African musicians, Ice Prince remains the pioneer in this historic moment at the BET Awards.
