A 45-year-old teacher, Stella Nwadigo, has been remanded by the Ogba Chief Magistrate Court following a disturbing incident involving the alleged assault of a three-year-old pupil, Abayomi Michael, at Christ-Mitos Primary School in Ikorodu, Lagos.
The shocking incident, captured in a viral video on January 7, 2025, showed Nwadigo repeatedly slapping the young boy for struggling to write numbers quickly. The footage ignited widespread public condemnation, leading to the teacher's immediate arrest.
During Thursday’s arraignment, police prosecutor Supol Akeem Raji detailed the alleged assault, stating that Nwadigo delivered multiple blows to the child’s face, leaving him with visible injuries and swelling. The charges, he noted, contravene Sections 135 and 172 of the Lagos State Criminal Law, 2015.
Although Nwadigo pleaded not guilty, Magistrate Olabisi Kusanu granted her bail set at ₦200,000, alongside two sureties who must be gainfully employed. However, the teacher was remanded at Kirikiri Correctional Facility pending the next hearing on February 18, 2025.
Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed Nwadigo's arrest, revealing that the viral video prompted swift action by the Ikorodu Police Division's Family Support Unit. The case was subsequently transferred to the Gender Unit at the Command Headquarters for further investigation. Meanwhile, the injured pupil received medical attention to ensure his recovery.
This troubling incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding children in educational environments. Stay tuned for updates as the case unfolds.
