Will Smith resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Friday after slapping Chris Rock for making a joke about his wife, Jada, during the Oscars.
The actor has already apologized for his behavior, saying that his acts were "inappropriate and unforgivable" and left him "embarrassed," and he has stated that he will fully accept all penalties.
Smith claimed he was heartbroken because he not only breached the Academy's trust but also denied other candidates and award recipients the ability to enjoy and be honored for their exceptional work in a statement released in reaction to the Academy.
"Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home are among those I have hurt." He also remarked that he wants to refocus attention on those who deserve it for their accomplishments, allowing the Academy to return to its tremendous work supporting creativity and artistry in film.
"Change takes time, and I'm determined to putting in the effort necessary to ensure that violence never again triumphs over reason."
