Marian Robinson, the mother of former US First Lady Michelle Obama, has passed away at the age of 86.
According to a statement from her family, Robinson died "peacefully" on Friday morning.
Robinson was a familiar and beloved presence at the White House during Barack Obama's presidency from 2009 to 2017. She devoted much of her time to caring for her granddaughters, Malia and Sasha Obama, supporting her daughter Michelle and son-in-law Barack.
In a heartfelt statement shared on social media, Michelle Obama expressed her deep gratitude for her mother, calling her "my rock, always there for whatever I needed." She added, "She was the same steady backstop for our entire family, and we are heartbroken to share she passed away today."
Barack Obama also paid tribute to his mother-in-law in a separate post, saying, “There was and will be only one Marian Robinson. In our sadness, we are lifted up by the extraordinary gift of her life. And we will spend the rest of ours trying to live up to her example."
No further details about the cause of death have been provided.
Born in 1937, Marian Robinson grew up in Chicago as one of seven children. She spent most of her life in the city before moving to Washington, D.C., following Barack Obama's election victory. Her life and legacy continue to inspire her family and many others who admired her quiet strength and dedication.
