On December 23, the Kano State Police Command made a grim discovery when 24-year-old housewife Hafsat Surajo was arrested for allegedly stabbing Nafiu Hafiz to death in Unguwa Uku, Tauranin Local Government Area.
The incident, confirmed by the command's spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, unfolded as Hafsat claimed she was prevented from committing suicide by the now-deceased Nafiu.
According to the statement released on December 22, 2023, Hafsat confessed to using a knife to stab Nafiu multiple times while he attempted to intervene and stop her from taking her own life. The shocking turn of events led to the arrest not only of Hafsat but also her husband, Dayyabu Abdullahi, and their gateman, Mallam Adam, on charges of packaging and concealing the deceased's body.
The police received a report on December 21, 2023, from Hafizu Salisu of Bauchi Metropolis, stating that Dayyabu Abdullahi informed him of the death of his brother, Nafi'u Hafiz, aged 38. Upon arriving at the residence in Unguwa Uku Quarters Kano, the family discovered multiple injuries on Nafiu's lifeless body, suspected to be the result of knife stabs.
In response to the tragic incident, Commissioner of Police CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel directed the Divisional Police Officer, SP Abubakar Chika Zaki, and his team to conduct a preliminary investigation. The lifeless body was then transported to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, where a medical doctor confirmed Nafiu's death.
Further investigations at the Command’s Criminal Investigation Department revealed Hafsat's admission of the crime, detailing how she acted alone in stabbing Nafiu during the struggle to prevent her suicide. The arrests of Dayyabu Abdullahi and Mallam Adam followed, accusing them of involvement in packaging and concealing the dead body. The tragic event serves as a somber reminder of the complexities that can arise in personal struggles and relationships.
