A viral claim circulating on social media suggests that the FBI recently raided a New York property allegedly owned by former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, discovering a staggering $5 billion in cash and $700 million in gold.

However, after a thorough investigation, there is no credible evidence to support this sensational story.

Origins of the Claim

The rumor, which spread rapidly on platforms like Facebook and X (formerly Twitter), claims that former U.S. President Donald Trump ordered a crackdown on Nigerian politicians' properties in the U.S., leading to the alleged discovery of immense wealth. Some users expressed shock at the news, while others quickly dismissed it as false.

One post shared by a user reads: "Breaking News: $5 Billion in Cash and $700 Million in Gold Found in Buhari's New York Residence as FBI Raids Property; Trump Orders Clampdown on Nigerian Politicians' Homes."

No Evidence to Back the Allegation

A search of credible sources, including top international news outlets and trusted fact-checking organizations, reveals no reports or confirmations of such a raid. Given the magnitude of the claim, it’s unlikely that major global news agencies would have overlooked such a significant discovery.

Additionally, Buhari has consistently stated that he owns only three properties—one in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, and two in Kaduna. In January 2025, he reaffirmed that his income comes primarily from rental earnings on one of his properties in Kaduna.

This claim, therefore, appears to be yet another unfounded rumor with no factual basis. Stay informed and always verify stories before believing or sharing them.
