The Abia State Government has officially confirmed the death of a student from Abia State University during a recent clash between rival cult groups over the weekend.
The unfortunate incident has heightened tensions on the campus, prompting the government to take immediate actions to restore normalcy.
Speaking to newsmen after the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti, Commissioner for Information and Culture, Okey Kanu, conveyed the government's awareness of the skirmishes at Abia State University, Uturu, leading to the tragic loss of a student's life.
Kanu stated, "It has come to the notice of the state government about skirmishes in Abia State University, Uturu, between student groups where a student lost his life. Some remedial actions have been taken to return normalcy (in the institution). The state government has dispatched some security agencies to Abia State University Uturu."
Amidst the efforts to address the aftermath of the clash, Kanu issued a plea to students, urging them to prioritize their studies and refrain from engaging in violence.
The unfortunate incident reportedly involved a renewed outbreak of violence between two rival cult groups, resulting in the tragic death of a 400-level student majoring in History and International Relations. Eyewitnesses revealed that the victim was attacked by members of a rival group within the university area.

Despite attempts to obtain comments from the school authorities being hindered by communication challenges, the state Commissioner of Police, Kenechukwu Onwumelie, assured that the police are aware of the matter and are actively investigating the incident.
