The Brazilian government announced on Friday that Nigeria has officially accepted an invitation to become a partner country in BRICS, the multinational bloc of emerging economies.
This development was revealed in a statement issued by Brazil’s Foreign Ministry.
As the current president of BRICS for 2025, Brazil commended Nigeria’s active role in fostering collaboration within the Global South and its efforts to drive reforms in global governance systems—key priorities for the bloc.
“Nigeria, as the 6th most populous country in the world and the largest in Africa, boasts one of the continent’s largest economies. These attributes align closely with the strategic interests of BRICS member nations,” the statement read.
With this move, Nigeria joins a group that has expanded to include eight additional nations from regions such as Latin America, Eastern Europe, and Asia, further solidifying its position on the global stage.
This partnership is set to open doors for increased economic collaboration, geopolitical influence, and shared initiatives among emerging economies worldwide.
