A man presumed to be a scavenger was discovered dead after an abandoned one-storey building's staircase reportedly collapsed on him at Elechi Street in the Mile 3 area of Diobu in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Our correspondent, upon visiting the location, noted that the one-storey building had succumbed to overgrowth of weeds, with visible cracks in the walls.

Addressing the incident, Godstime Ihunwo, the Chief Security Officer of Nkpolu Oroworukwo Mile 3 Diobu, reported that he received information around 6:15 pm on Wednesday indicating that some hoodlums were inside the building, engaging in the consumption of substances suspected to be hard drugs.

Ihunwo, who is also a member of a local vigilante group, mentioned that he promptly mobilized his team to the scene. Upon arrival, the hoodlums had already vacated the premises.

He explained that the Diobu Vigilante Service had previously been alerted to the activities of troublemakers who had turned the vacant building into a site for drug use.

He commented, "Upon receiving fresh complaints from residents of 38 Elechi Streets, Mile 3 Diobu, Port Harcourt, where hoodlums were known to gather and consume hard drugs, I swiftly mobilized my team to the location.

"Upon reaching the site, the hoodlums had left the abandoned building. However, during our search, we discovered the lifeless body of a man.

"We also observed that the staircase of the deserted one-storey building had collapsed on the deceased. We immediately raised an alarm, drawing the attention of area residents who arrived at the scene.

"We promptly informed the Nkpolu Divisional Police headquarters in Mile 3 Diobu about the situation."
