The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Maitama denied the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr.

Godwin Emefiele, permission to travel abroad for a medical examination.

Presiding Justice Hamza Mu’azu concluded that Emefiele failed to provide evidence of a life-threatening condition necessitating overseas treatment. The court emphasized that no medical report had been submitted to substantiate the claim of illness, and noted that Emefiele was currently facing multiple charges in various courts.

"It is at the court’s discretion to allow the defendant to travel for medical reasons," stated Justice Mu’azu. "However, the defendant did not present any medical documentation in support of his application. Given his ongoing trials in three other courts, I cannot grant this request. Therefore, the application is dismissed."

Emefiele's legal team had petitioned the court to permit him to travel to the United Kingdom for a medical check-up, requesting the release of his international passport, which he had surrendered as a bail condition.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), prosecuting Emefiele, opposed the request. EFCC's lawyer, Muhammad Omeiza, submitted a counter-affidavit, arguing that no medical evidence had been provided to justify the travel request.

Funke Adekoya (A Senior Advocate of Nigeria)I wouldnt say it portrays the Nigeria judiciary in any particular way. The judiciary has to work with the information that is presented to it. So, I think the issue really is the investigative processes. It is not a question of lapses, perhaps, on the prosecution side of it. Assuming for the sake of argument that there was any effort or intention to ensure that Ibori is not convicted; if you dont give the judiciar...
