Sequel to the recent incident involving the assault of a female nurse, Ms.

Blessing Ogbonna, by a group of masquerades in Ihe-Owerre, Nsukka Local Government Area of the state, the Enugu State House of Assembly has taken decisive steps to address the issue.

The assembly has established an ad-hoc committee tasked with developing practical measures to regulate the activities of masquerades across the state. This decision, made during a session on Thursday in Enugu, stemmed from a motion put forward by Mr. Malachy Onyechi aimed at tackling the abuse of human rights, threats to life, and property destruction caused by masquerades in Nsukka West Constituency.

Representing Nsukka West constituency, Onyechi highlighted the alarming extent of the masquerade menace in the area, citing numerous cases of injuries and fatalities resulting from their actions. He drew attention to the recent assault on Ms. Ogbonna, which sparked widespread condemnation and outcry both within and outside the state.

During his address to the assembly, Onyechi recounted the vicious attack on Ms. Ogbonna, which resulted in her hospitalization. He emphasized that such incidents were not isolated, citing documented evidence of violence perpetrated by misguided masquerades and their followers.

The lawmaker further informed the assembly that seven masquerades involved in the assault had been apprehended and subsequently charged at a magistrate court in Nsukka. They faced charges of assault, extortion, and the obstruction of a federal road.
