The Nsukka community in Enugu State is in mourning following the tragic death of senior lawyer Barrister Eli Ugwu, who was fatally shot.
The shocking incident has plunged the entire populace into deep sorrow and grief.
Reports from reliable sources indicate that the legal luminary was gunned down in Kogi State shortly after fulfilling the demands of kidnappers who had abducted his cousin.
However, conflicting narratives surround the circumstances of his demise.
Initially, it was believed that he fell victim to the kidnappers' bullets after delivering the ransom as demanded.
In a Facebook post, Senator Chijinkem Ugwuanyi lamented the loss, stating, "A part of us is Gone! He was shot dead in Kogi state while trying to pay ransom for his kidnapped cousin. The story is not clear since yesterday, but this is the much we know at the moment."
Contrary reports now suggest that Ugwu was fatally shot by law enforcement officers as he emerged from the bush with his cousin following the latter's release by the kidnappers.
A senior legal practitioner, speaking on condition of anonymity, disclosed that Ugwu was mistakenly shot by police personnel despite having successfully delivered the ransom and was escorting the victim to safety.
"Eli was shot dead, but his cousin (the kidnap victim) is responding to treatment. It's a devastating loss," the source revealed with apprehension.
Eli Ugwu, a prominent member of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Nsukka, leaves behind a legacy of legal excellence and community service.
