Residential and other public houses used for kidnapping would henceforth be demolished in Enugu State.

In the alternative, such houses would be forfeited to the state government.

These are among the provisions of the amended Criminal Code Law, Cap 30, Laws of Enugu State, House Bill 12, 2016, which was passed into law by the Enugu State House of Assembly on Tuesday.

Speaking before the amended bill was passed into law, the Leader of the House, Ikechukwu Ezeugwu, who presented the bill, said the move was necessary because kidnapping was alien to Enugu State.

The lawmaker noted that the crime was only heard of in the Niger Delta, where expatriate oil workers were kidnapped for ransom, before it spread to other parts of the country, including Enugu State.

He expressed regrets that the criminal act was fast becoming a part of the countrys culture.

The law has to be stringent so that before anybody thinks of kidnapping, he has to think twice. We have to adopt the amendment that buildings used for kidnapping be forfeited or demolished to deter people from engaging in it, he added.
