In a tragic incident that unfolded in the early hours of Tuesday on the Oru Ijebu-Igbo Road in Ogun State, three passengers lost their lives, and several others sustained injuries in a fatal accident.
The unfortunate collision involved a Toyota Camry car and a tricycle, and an eyewitness, speaking on condition of anonymity, shared insights into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
According to the eyewitness, the driver of the Toyota Camry, reportedly a learner, made a critical error while behind the wheel. The miscalculation led to a collision with a tricycle, resulting in a devastating outcome. The tricycle driver was among those who tragically lost their lives in the accident.
Babatunde Akinbiyi, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, confirmed the incident during an interview with PUNCH Metro. Akinbiyi provided additional details, revealing that the owner of the Toyota Camry, accompanied by his wife and child, had been teaching his wife how to drive at the time of the accident. However, this training session took place on the highway, a practice deemed both unsafe and in violation of traffic regulations.
Regrettably, the Toyota Camry owner and his family fled the scene upon realizing the severity of the casualties they had caused. Akinbiyi explained that instead of applying the brake, the woman behind the wheel accidentally pressed the acceleration pedal, resulting in the collision with the oncoming tricycle.
This tragic incident highlights the consequences of unsafe driving practices and serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of adhering to traffic regulations. As investigations continue, authorities are likely to scrutinize the circumstances surrounding the accident, emphasizing the need for responsible and cautious driving to prevent such heart-wrenching incidents on the road.
