In a surprising political move, former Governor of Kaduna State, Mukhtar Ramalan Yero, has officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) five months after parting ways with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Yero, who served as the governor of Kaduna State from 2012 to 2015 under the PDP banner, faced defeat in the 2015 elections, losing to the current governor, Nasir El-Rufai. Addressing the recent development, Yero stated, “Since the very day we announced our defection from PDP, many political parties contacted us, including the ruling APC. We met and discussed since the very day we left our former party."
As of February 12, 2024, Yero and representatives of his political associates have officially joined the APC. Following their decision, they engaged in discussions with the state governor, emphasizing that their move was in response to the invitation extended to them by the ruling party.
In his appeal to supporters, the former governor encouraged them to join him in the APC, emphasizing their collective contribution towards advancing the state and the nation.
Responding to Yero's switch to the APC, Kaduna State PDP Secretary Ibrahim Wosono expressed that the decision did not come as a surprise. He emphasized that the fortunes of the PDP were not dependent on any individual, and Yero's defection would not significantly impact the party's prospects in the upcoming general election.
Wosono noted, "The defection of Ramalan Yero, I don’t think will affect the fortune of PDP in the next coming election by God’s grace." He underscored the resilience of the PDP, citing historical instances where prominent figures left the party, and it continued to remain robust.
Despite Yero's political journey, which included serving as a commissioner, deputy governor, and governor under the PDP, Wosono highlighted the former governor's legal entanglements with the APC. Yero had faced legal challenges, including court cases and investigations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), initiated by the APC.
The political landscape in Kaduna State is undoubtedly undergoing shifts, and the implications of Yero's move will be closely observed as the state approaches the next election cycle.
