The peace in Anambra State was disrupted as gunmen launched an attack on the Neni divisional police station in Anaocha LGA.
According to Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the state's police command, the assailants targeted the station using improvised explosive devices (IEDs), causing damage to a section of the building.
Fortunately, the swift response of police officers on duty thwarted the attackers' efforts, forcing them to retreat from the scene. Ikenga reassured the public that no lives were lost, no officers were abducted, and no firearms were stolen during the incident. However, the police facility sustained damage due to the detonation of the IEDs.
"Our operatives courageously confronted the assailants, prompting them to flee the area. Operations are currently ongoing to apprehend the perpetrators," Ikenga stated.
This recent attack comes on the heels of the Anambra police command's successful recovery of AK-47 rifles stolen during a previous assault on the state's police headquarters in 2021. Ikenga disclosed that one of the recovered rifles had been taken from the area command headquarters in Ogidi during a separate attack in 2023.
The Anambra State police remain resolute in their commitment to maintaining law and order in the face of such threats. Investigations into the attack on the Neni divisional police station are underway, with efforts focused on bringing the culprits to justice and preventing future incidents of violence against law enforcement agencies.
