The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has swiftly responded to circulating rumors on social media claiming the death of its National Chairman, Prof.
Mahmood Yakubu. The Commission has labeled the report as "fake news."
The false story, which first surfaced on Monday, 9th December 2024, claimed that Yakubu had passed away in a London hospital. INEC, through a statement signed by Rotimi Oyekanmi, the Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman, has strongly refuted the claim.
"We urge the public to disregard this baseless rumor. Prof. Yakubu is alive, healthy, and active. In fact, he has not traveled to London in the past two years," the statement emphasized.
INEC further clarified that Yakubu attended an interactive meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters on Wednesday, 11th December 2024, and chaired a crucial Commission meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners on Thursday, 12th December 2024. These events were widely covered by both television and print media, including front-page reports in major newspapers on Friday, 13th December 2024.
The Commission also reminded the public that a similar fake rumor was spread in 2021, highlighting the persistent nature of such misinformation. INEC warned those responsible for spreading these malicious stories to consider their impact on individuals and society.
As part of its ongoing efforts to fight fake news, INEC pledged to continue collaborating with credible media outlets to tackle the growing threat posed by false information.
