The Kano State House of Assembly has initiated the process of amending the Kano State Emirs (Appointment and Deposition) Law, responding to growing calls for the reinstatement of the deposed 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi.

The decision to amend the law was taken after the Majority Leader, Hussien Dala, who represents the Dala constituency, proposed the motion during a plenary session on Tuesday.

According to Daily Trust, the law was first amended in 2019 amidst tensions between then-Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and the deposed Emir Sanusi. This initial amendment divided the Kano emirate into five separate emirates, creating Rano, Karaye, Gaya, and Bichi Emirates, each with its own First Class Emir. This restructuring ultimately led to Emir Sanusi's deposition.

With the recent electoral victory of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who campaigned on restoring the traditional Kano Emirate system, there has been renewed advocacy for Emir Sanusi's reinstatement. Just a month before Governor Yusuf took office, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, leader of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) and the ruling party in Kano, indicated that the issue of the emirates would be revisited.
