Highlighting the need for such legislation, Mr. Obasa explained that the proposed law aims to empower the state government and organizations like the Ibile Muslim Community Zakat and Sadaqah Foundation to oversee and regulate aid distribution. This initiative will ensure that donations reach those in need without them having to beg on the streets.

Mr. Obasa emphasized the urgency of this regulation due to the increasing number of beggars in Lagos. He mentioned that the law would impose sanctions on anyone caught begging on the streets or facilitating such activities, particularly involving children.

The launch of the foundation, sponsored by Lotus Bank, seeks to empower underprivileged Muslims and alleviate poverty through the promotion of Zakat, Sadaqah, and Waqf. Mr. Obasa underscored the importance of Zakat in eradicating poverty, benefiting both the givers and the recipients.

“It is crucial for those blessed by God to assist the less privileged,” he said, stressing that charity should begin within one's immediate family and extend to the wider society. The goal is to reduce poverty and improve the quality of life for everyone, fostering a sense of equality and comfort.
